What Is TMD?
TMJ and TMD are two different things. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. So when there's a problem with the TMJ's function, we call it TMD or temporomandibular joint disorder.
Like other joints in your body, your jaw joint can become inflamed and lead to problems with the TMJ and surrounding muscles and tendons.
Some common TMD symptoms are:
- Difficulty opening and closing the mouth
- Inability to move the jaw from side to side
- Difficulty chewing properly
- Headaches and neck or shoulder pain
If you are prone to bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching), you are also prone to TMD issues.
What Is Bruxism?
Bruxism refers to chronic teeth grinding or clenching. You may not even know you're doing it unless a sleep partner mentions it.
You may awaken with a painful headache or notice tooth wear and fractures. This is because your jaw muscles exert a surprising amount of pressure—even when you are sleeping—and can cause damage to your teeth over time.
Signs of bruxism often include the following:
- Facial pain
- Pain and stiffness in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles and tendons
- Worn-down teeth
- Broken teeth
- Fractured fillings
Once you stop grinding your teeth, most of these symptoms will disappear. If you have had restorations to fix worn-down or broken teeth or fractured fillings, these restorations should now last longer.
How Do You Treat Bruxism?
Fortunately, Dr. Gentry offers solutions for bruxism in Charlotte, NC, with a custom night guard.
A night guard is an acrylic appliance made of durable plastic and fits over teeth to protect them from wear and damage.
You can wear the night guard comfortably while you sleep, which helps your muscles relax and reduces bruxing. Mouth guards may also reduce headaches and other pain associated with teeth grinding.
Dr. Gentry takes a holistic approach to treatment and can advise you on relaxation techniques to help reduce stress to eliminate teeth-grinding and clenching.
If you suspect bruxism is a problem for you, contact Gentry Dental today for more information on how Dr. Gentry can help you.
