Understanding Digital and CBCT Imaging

Both digital and 3-D x-rays allow us to see what's happening internally or underneath the surface; however, digital x-rays provide us with a 2-D image, while Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) gives us 3-D perspective that provides deeper imaging of nerve pathways, airway structure and volume, and anatomical structures, like the jaw joint (TMJ).

Combining the two types of x-rays enables more accurate diagnosis and treatment planning, resulting in the best possible outcomes for our patients.

When Do We Recommend CBCT Scans?

Dr. Gentry uses 3-D imaging in several ways:

  • Treatment planning — Dr. Gentry can plan treatments, such as implant placement or failed root canal treatment, ahead of time to streamline the procedure on the day of surgery.
  • Identify infections — 3-D imaging allows us to see concerns like root or bone infections or cavitations early on.

What Are the Benefits of Digital X-Rays and 3-D Imaging?

Digital Impressions

Did you know that 3-D imaging can also be used for taking impressions of your teeth?

If you’ve had a crown procedure done, you may remember the messy, gooey impressions of your teeth that were necessary to fabricate your new tooth. 3-D imaging has revolutionized and streamlined the entire crown process.

Now we can scan a 3-D image of your tooth, which Dr. Gentry uses to customize your crown. This image is sent directly to our milling machine, which then creates your high-quality restoration based on that 3-D image. With digital technology, there are no more messy and uncomfortable impressions

Frequently Asked Questions

At Gentry Dental, we use digital x-rays, which offer a number of benefits to both our patients and our doctor. Digital X-Ray on Computer | Digital X-Rays in Charlotte, NC

Digital imaging exposes patients to 80% less radiation than traditional x-rays. It also allows us immediate access to your images so Dr. Gentry can discuss any concerns or treatment needs with you.

What are x-rays used for?

Dr. Gentry uses x-rays for many purposes, and they are a very important diagnostic tool. With digital imaging, she can see cavities between teeth, detect tooth decay in its earliest stage, and look for pathology, cysts, tumors, arthritic changes of the condyle, and problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ or your jaw joint). She can also determine whether wisdom teeth need to be extracted. The earlier we detect many of these conditions the less costly and invasive your treatment will be, while also ensuring you have the best chance of recovery.

We also use x-rays to plan for dental implant treatment. Dr. Gentry can determine whether you have enough healthy bone structure to support an implant, and she can even use these images to plan your surgical placement ahead of time. This means that your actual surgery will be smooth, successful, and efficient. We rely on x-rays to ensure that our treatment diagnoses and procedures are accurate and precise.
