Common types of emergencies and what you should do:
Swelling: this is usually the result of a severe infection that could even be life-threatening! It is often due to an abscessed tooth or gum infection. It is usually accompanied by a significant amount of pain, but at times can be non-painful. Call us immediately! We will evaluate what is causing the infection and provide treatment the same day. If you develop a high fever, feel ill, or have difficulty swallowing or breathing, this has become a true emergency and you must go to the emergency room right away.
Toothache: a toothache can be caused by cavities, gum disease, abscessed tooth, or even grinding your teeth (bruxism). Medications like Orajel generally do not work very well, and we need to address the cause of the pain. If you are not able to see the dentist right away, a combination of Ibuprofen (600 mg) and Acetaminophen (1000 mg) can be taken. You must have healthy kidneys and liver to take this combination and have to be careful not to exceed the maximum daily doses of these medications.
Broken or chipped tooth: If it is a front tooth, try to save the piece that broke to bring with you to your appointment. Whether it is in the front or the back, call us right away. Delay in treatment could cause the tooth to abscess or could even cause you to lose the tooth. Many times the pain is associated with breaking a tooth, but it can also be painless. Do not take this as a sign that everything is okay. You must be seen immediately to avoid further problems.
Knocked out tooth: Act quickly! You must try to get to a dentist within 30 minutes to have the best chance of saving the tooth. Handle the tooth carefully- do not touch the root of the tooth. If it is dirty, gently rinse the tooth with water only- no soap- and do not scrub the tooth. Attempt to gently place the tooth back in its socket right away. If that is not possible, you need to keep the tooth moist. Either put it in your mouth next to your cheek, in milk, or in an emergency kit called Save-a-Tooth. Head straight to our office to be treated.
Crown off: Do not use superglue to put it back on! This can damage the tooth. You can use a denture adhesive such as Fixodent to temporarily to reattach the crown. We will need to examine the tooth and crown to determine why it dislodged and either cement it professionally or fabricate a new crown.
